Last development of scientists of The university will possibly give hope for faster creation of the quantum computers: Robert Schoelkopf and Steven  girvin created the artificial atom, capable of preserving and absorbing the individual photons of microwave range. About this they communicates in the fresh number of periodical nature, which left on 1 February (No. 445, s. 515-518). Studies began several years ago and in 2004 scientists even devised our own name for their direction – integral quantum electrodynamics. Discipline, which investigates interaction of integrated circuits with the microwave photons, hides itself under this name. The image of response artificial atom, obtained with the aid of scanning electron microscope, is shown in the photograph. The atom, which consists of several billion atoms of aluminum placed inside resonator. The level of signal, which passed through the resonator, noticeably differs for each discrete number of photons, which are found at the given moment inside the resonator. The main result of investigating is the increase in the dimensions of quantum- mechanical object from the dimensions of atom or molecule to the almost macroscopic scales, which in principle makes possible to create quantum calculator with the use of contemporary technologies for the production of semiconductor integrated circuits.
