Among the set of update , brought by the new operating system windows vista, there are two technologies intended to accelerate PC work due to the use of flash- memory: SuperFetch and ReadyBoost.
The first of them works as follows: the frequently utilized system libraries and program files load in Memory, which makes possible to more rapidly start programs and to work with them. Let us say, if, after arriving in your office morning, you usually start browser, email program, messenger, text and excel , then after waiting several minutes you will see that those custom applications will begin to start noticeably faster. The basic components of the frequently utilized programs through several minutes after PC start will be already in your operational memory.
The technology readyBoost consists in the growth of operational memory due to the use of flash- mmeory with interface USB 2.0. Their access time is less than in hard disks, which must give gain in the general system performance. It is necessary to note that Vista will note store in this flash-disk the critically important data , to prevent any data loss .
The site toms hardware made tests of the effectiveness of technologies superFetch and ReadyBoost on contemporary system with memory volume 512 mb., 1 Gb or 2 Gb.
As the test applications were used Microsoft outlook with post communications file having the volume of 1,5 Gb, Internet explorer 7, which opens locally saved web-page and text editor OpenOffice with several open documents.
The following task are made :
First cycle:
- Starting Windows vista, pause 2 minutes
- starting internet explorer, pause in 5 minutes (15 minutes if flash- disk with support readyBoost was connected for the first time)
- Starting microsoft outlook, pause 2 minutes
- Starting openOffice writer, pause 2 minutes
- Closing OpenOffice
- Closing Microsoft outlook
- Closing Internet explorer, pause 2 minutes
Second cycle:
- Starting internet explorer, pause 2 minutes
- Starting microsoft outlook, pause 2 minutes
- Starting openOffice writer, pause 2 minutes
- Closing OpenOffice
- Closing Microsoft outlook
- Closing Internet explorer
The third cycle is analogous to the second.
The reboot was excuted out after the completion of the third and second cycles .
Without the connected flash- disk was analyzed the work Of superFetch, with it - the joint operation Of superFetch and ReadyBoost. Results can be looked on the accompanying diagrams (Microsoft and OpenOffice , about 50 KB each). If we comment by words, then they impress. With 512 mb. OZU the time the downloading Of openOffice Of writer 2.1 and Outlook 2007 was reduced to the third time from 9-10 seconds to it was 2nd 4- x.
The addition of giga-byte flash- disk makes it possible to somewhat reduce the starting time of applications (to 2-3 seconds).
With growth of the volume of memory to 1 or 2 Gb the advantage from the application Of superFetch becomes already far from so explicit, although a certain acceleration nevertheless can be noted.
However, as far as ReadyBoost is concerned, its benefit in the overwhelming majority of the cases can be seen only with the stopwatch, which measures the tenths of second.
As a whole it is possible to make the conclusion that the new technologies are capable of accelerating work PK, especially those, which are equipped with the small volume of operational memory.
